Oh Sweet Guatemala - Sarah Kennedy

Mrs. Elvira, who kindly feeds me breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday and gives me a place to rest my head.

The police officer at the bank that I see every day because opening up a bank account in a foreign land is nothing short of a challenge.

Natalia, my Spanish teacher who is 7 years younger than me and is full of so much joy and life.

The man on the corner with his wife and guitar, trying to make a living despite their current life circumstances.

These people are relatively strangers. I cannot have an in depth, personal conversation with them (yet). They know nothing about me except that I’m the white girl they happen to see every day.

I’ve had to reshape my thinking these past few days. It’s easy to see fruit and purpose when you’ve been cultivating and pouring into your community for years. To start all over is a new ball game. The cherry on top is that I cannot speak their language. Oh, but their faces. Their eyes match mine each time I see them. I can’t help but think how purposeful it all is.

I look forward to their faces every day. It brings hope of a forever glory.

To give myself something to look back on in the future, I wanted to share some things to note from my first few days here:

  • I discovered that there is a middle eastern population here! I about lost my mind. I’m hoping to somehow get more involved with them here.

  • I attend shoreline city (a church) and I love everything about it. It’s the only similar and familiar thing in my life right now.

  • I got to pray over my host mom and her husband and afterward, she told me I need to preach. If you remember my last post, this is quite an interesting thing to hear (again). I’m interested to see what the Lord does with that.

  • I get to spend my days figuring it all out with 3 other missionaries who, like me, prayed to have people when they got here. The Lord knew we needed each other.

  • Because of the lack of sleep, I get to see  the sunrises and sunsets here and they bring me to tears each time. What an honor to get to see both in this season.

Prayer requests:

  • I just finished my first week of school and it is so important I know this language. Let’s pray it all clicks haha!

  • There are 3 other missionaries with me and it’s clear that the enemy is trying to destroy us, especially mentally and psychically. We are desperate for triumph over this and healing/energy.

  • I am praying daily for divine appointments and for community, I would love for you to join me!

Thank you all for reading these and for being in this with me. - Sarah Kennedy
